Covenant Presbyterian Church supports the efforts being made to have a Citizen’s Initiated Referendum on this topic of parental authority, which is really what the “anti-smacking” law is about. We believe the Lord God has given different responsibilities to different parts of society such as the Family, the Church and the State. Raising children is primarily the responsibility of the Family, not the State. This new law is an unwarranted intrusion by the State into the domain of the Family; therefore both Families and the Church are right to call the State to account.
No abuse is acceptable, but “reasonable force” (such as an appropriate smack) is not abuse.
